Heavy rains and flash floods hit some of Sudan states including Khartoum causing devastation of thousands of houses, infrastructures, schools, hospitals and other public services resources. 26TH August 2009. Khartoum states has witnessed unusual six hours of heavy downpour of rains averaging between 42 to71m, which resulted in extensive flooding. The accumulation of rains submerged roads, open grounds and homes. Most of affected residents areas are slums and shanty areas. The damage is attributed to poor drainage system. According to civil defense authorities report, 20 died and 30 people are injured. The humanitarian Aid commission (HAC) report said, over 21000 house holds are affected by floods in various parts of Khartoum, 13,834 houses were completely destroyed and 8,457 partially damaged.

SRCS action and response

Approximately 450 volunteers are mobilized to carrying out activities of assessment, distribution and delivery of other services in Khartoum. Meanwhile the same figure implements the same activities in the affected states
The international Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies allocated 244,000CHF. From its disaster relief emergency fund (DREF), to cover the cost of emergency activities to be implemented by SRCS.
SRCS also launched an internal appeal (through the local news papers) for private and public sectors to contribute in providing humanitarian assistants for the affected people.
SRCS distributed 3000 packages of non food item (NFI) provided by ICRC. Each package contains tarpaulin, mattress, clothes, kitchen set, blankets and jerry cans. The items distributed have covered 3000 of affected families in various areas of Khartoum localities. SRCS is also started distribution of similar 6000 packages in collaboration with Catholic Relief Service organization (CRS), for 6000 affected families in (Suba Alaradi) resident area, donated by UNJLC. This in additional to 3000 parcels of food items distributed for 3000 house holds in (Alfateh) resident area in Umdurman north..

Khadim Alla Abd Alrahman, a young mother of 35years old, whom I met at SRCS distribution center in (Suba Alaradi), said , I will never forget that day of 26THAugust 2009 in my life; it was a horrible day for both me and my family, because my house and properties have gone in a very dramatic way, I only remained with tow beds and these shelter materials, that I have just received from SRCS, I thanks SRCS.

Khadim Alla as one of many thousands of people, came to live in this slum resident area despite they know that this area is unplanned and they may be removed at any time. All of houses are constructed of adobe material, therefore major parts of houses were immediately destroyed, when the flooding water submerge the area

People of (Suba Alaradi) area were suffering a lot of lack of potable water, because the existing Boreholes, either not operating or isolated by undrained waters. They have to Pay 12 SD for one drum of drinking water (six times before the flooding), the water brought from remote boreholes on cards pulled by donkeys, this situation was only improved when SRCS volunteers operated tow out of four boreholes in the area.

Collapse of latrines and stagnant water have worsened health situation in the area, 150 to 200 patients of malaria and infections are daily admitted in the SRCS mobile clink, which established early in the area, this in additional to 10 volunteers mobilizes to carry out some health education, hygiene promotion activities.

SRCS was also getting involved and taking the leading role to implementing together with a number civil society organizations of hygiene promotion and sanitation activities in greater Umdurman, this program focused on draining of stagnant water and vector control .6- 10 volunteers were participating daily in the work. Education and hygiene promotion,
The Red Crescent Society works on the flood emergency appeal, which its overall objective is to provide assistants for 10000 families affected by floods in seven localities in Khartoum. The scope of appeal will be in area of distribution of emergency shelter and materials and other non food items, health care, water and sanitation, health seeking 2,500,000 CHF.
